External hemorrhoids are enlarged, blood-filled varicose veins resembling little neoplasms, around the anus. The cause for these painful lumps usually is serious constipation, obesity, sitting on a modern toilet for too long (pressure) a diet high in refined foods or overuse of laxatives. Basically, the cause can be attributed to the increased pressure on the anus due to constipation or obesity.
Internal hemorrhoids are usually less painful due to the lack of nerve endings in and anal canal. Most people are not aware of their internal hemorrhoids until they rupture and bleed into the stool.
Relieving the pressure by losing weight and/or reducing constipation evidently eases the pain and shrinks the veins back to normal. The condition improves tremendously with a high fiber diet (relief of constipation), exercise and a reduced intake of fast food or processed foods.
For temporary relief of hemorrhoidal pain, OTC medicine such as preparation H may be used, in more severe cases, surgery may need to be considered.
