A creatinine test measures the amount of creatinine in blood and urine. Creatine is muscle protein. Creatinine is the metabolic product from creatine, a waste product. Abnormal amounts in the test called creatinine stand for various pathologies. Approx. 2 % of the body’s creatine is converted into creatinine every day, it is transported via the bloodstream to the kidneys and excreted in the urin.
The kidneys are responsible to maintain normal levels of creatinine. Inaccurate kidney functioning can be assessed with the creatinine clearance. As kidneys become impaired, abnormal levels of creatinine can be detected in the blood.
Normal levels of creatinine are between 0.6 – 1.2 mg per dl in adult males and 0.5 – 1.1 in adult females. Adults with creatinine levels of over 10mg may need a dialysis machine to cleanse the creatinine out of the blood.
Glycine, magnesium, calcium, potassium and creatine monohydrate are the supplements to take when high creatinine levels are established.
